Searching for the Hawaiian Bobtail Squid with Hannah Osland

Hannah is a graduate student in environmental science at Alaska Pacific University. Currently, she's spending most of her time in Hawai'i studying the Hawaiian bobtail squid, a small bobtail squid that is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The best part of her work is getting to search for Hawaiian bobtail squid in the calm, shallow waters of Hawai'i. These bobtail squid are active after dark, so with her team they use flashlights to go into the water at night, and if they are lucky, will find the animals sitting on the sandy ocean floor or hovering in the water column. Her research focuses on understanding variations between groups of these animals, which can give us a better understanding of biodiversity in the ocean.
