Join us with a team of scientists on board the Research Vessel Atlantis and check out the famous submersible Alvin and the autonomous vehicle Sentry. There are 20 scientists participating in the Hot2Cold Vents expedition are using deep-sea exploration all-stars Alvin, a three-person submarine, and Sentry, an underwater robot, to investigate a hydrothermal vent ecosystem and surrounding terrain 2,500 meters deep in the East Pacific. Vents are hotspots of biodiversity in the deep ocean and home to communities of microbes and larger organisms. There many things we still don’t know about hydrothermal vents, which were discovered in 1977, and this site, in particular, may soon be significantly altered by a pending volcanic eruption. A few researchers from this expedition will talk about their research live from the ship and give tours of Alvin and Sentry.
