Food Security in the Freezing North: Where Does It Come From and How Can We Grow More?

How we access food, and its availability are the basics of food security. In southern, urban cities and towns, grocery stores, shops, and markets all provide year-round access to fresh food from all over the world. In northern, remote, and Arctic locations, food arrives by truck, plane or boat and travels thousands of miles further than food that comes to cities or is traditionally hunted and gathered from the land. How does this impact food security and what can be done? In this talk we will discuss how food comes to communities in remote locations, what food security is and the challenges of food security, and what is being done to grow more food in northern places. We will see examples of community gardens, extended season greenhouses, and hydroponics, and how communities are working together to increase food security.
