Exploring Viking History in Canada at L’Anse Aux Meadows National Historic Site

Around 1000 years ago a Norse expedition from Greenland landed in a shallow bay at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland, Canada. With Leif Eiriksson as leader of a group of 60 – 90 people they set up an encampment of buildings made of sod where they lived while exploring the region they called Vinland. Artifacts found when modern day archaeologists excavated what remained of their houses and work shops tell us a lot about the people who where here and what they were doing. Dale and Ragnar “Red Beard”, Parks Canada Heritage Interpreters, will talk about who these people were, where they came from, why they were here and why they left after only a few years and never returned.
