Explorer Classroom | Justine Ammendolia

Justine is a marine biologist, plastic pollution researcher and science communicator based out of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. In 2014, she was awarded the National Geographic Young Explorer Grant to travel to Eastern Greenland to research Arctic seabirds and live in an off-grid hunting cabin for 6 weeks. During this time, she fostered a deep passion for the Northern areas of our planet and became aware of the pressing issue of plastic pollution. Since then, she has traveled with an expedition tourism company to Arctic Canada and Western Greenland to sample plastics in the surface waters. Justine works as a “garbage detective” researching the plastic landscapes of the southern coastlines of Newfoundland. Through shoreline marine debris surveys and working at-sea with local fishers, she attempts to understand the presence, movement and potential harm caused by plastic pollution in Newfoundland waters.
