Dr. Cory Toth and Ryan Zimmerling | Bats!

Join Cory and Ryan for an exploration on one of the most successful mammal groups on the planet: bats! Learn how bats evolved, where they live, what they eat, and more. And, just in time for Halloween, find out why bats’ scary reputation isn’t deserved, and what we can do to make the world a safer place for them.

Cory is a wildlife biologist at the Canadian Wildlife Service in Ottawa, Ontario, where he works to conserve Canada’s six “priority species” (including four types of caribou, wood bison, and greater sage-grouse). He studied bats in New Zealand, the United States, and Central and South America for his PhD (University of Auckland) and postdoctoral work (Boise State University; Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute). His previous projects include studying the breeding behaviour of endemic New Zealand bats, foraging strategies of frog-eating bats, and how bat communities react to light and sound within their habitats.

Ryan manages the Migratory Birds and Wildlife Health Section of the Canadian Wildlife Service. He has been conducting bat research for over a decade. His research focusses mainly on assessing factors that influence the risk of mortality in an industrial landscape (e.g., at wind farms), and how those risks can be mitigated. He also monitors the movements of migratory tree bats, as very little is known about their behaviour and the risks that they face during migration.
