Canada’s National Genebank with Axel Diederichsen

Dr. Axel Diederichsen, Head Curator and Research Scientist for the Canada’s National Genebank, has dedicated his career to the conservation and study of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. He has worked in seed banks and centres in Germany and Sweden, and has been part of international organizations and taskforces to protect, exchange and understand genetic resources. He understands that these resources are key to the ecological and economic viability of the food and agricultural sector.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Canada’s National Genebank called Plant Gene Resources of Canada, located in Saskatchewan and run by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Axel will open the vault of stories to discuss why we need diversity in crop plants, how we can protect it and why it is so cool.

This is your chance to discover how a cow became the most important wheat breeder in Canada.
