Into the Arctic Aboard the Research Vessel Sikuliaq

1:00 pm to 1:45 pm EST
Not many people go to the Arctic in the winter, and that’s exactly why we are headed there now! While there is now lots of data about the annual summer ice melt, most research expeditions head south before winter sets in, missing out on observations and measurements during that critical ice formation time. This November, Dr. Thomson, an Oceanographer in the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington, will be chasing storms off the coast of Alaska and measuring the impact of big waves crashing into newly formed autumn ice. His platform is the 261-foot R/V Sikuliaq, the U.S.’s newest arctic research vessel, outfitted with state-of-the-art technology.
Join us aboard the Sikuliaq (Sih-kewl-ee-ack) and get an inside peek into what it’s like to do science research aboard a research vessel in the dark and cold arctic winter!
