Our Changing Planet Series: Part Three

Our Changing Planet

Series Three

May 6th – 9th

In Partnership With

Canada is host to many different habitat types, unique species, and exceptional ecosystems. This natural heritage is a key part to so many aspects of our lives – health, food, recreation, livelihoods, culture, art and music for example. Today, this heritage is facing many complex environmental challenges – from climate change to pollution and biodiversity loss. These threats put at risk not only the health and survival of species and ecosystems, but our way of life.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is the lead federal department for a wide range of environmental issues. The department’s work focuses on minimizing threats to people and nature from pollution; sharing information on weather, water and climate conditions; and conserving and restoring Canada’s natural environment.

ECCC scientists are hard at work in so many different fields. Their work helps ensure a clean, safe and sustainable environment for present and future generations.

Interested in learning more about the work of these inspiring people? This one- week series will bring you into the lives of some of these scientists, the work they do, challenges they face and even how their research is used to help you!

Each day will feature a different scientist talking about their specific field of research – something new every day. You don’t want to miss it!

Bright Lights, Big Cities, and Birds on the Move!

May 7th @ 12:00pm eastern

Barbara Frei is a research scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada. Her team is dedicated to providing the science we need for the cities we want in the future, including making them bird-friendly! With 80% of birds in Canada being migratory, almost any bird can be a ‘city bird’ as they pass through populated areas at least twice a year. To learn more about our feathered friends and where they go, she uses innovative technology such as song recognition algorithms, tiny nanotag backpacks, and more. Her team also tries to find what are the win-wins for conservation, aka how we can manage our cities to be good for people AND nature!

Making Parks for Animals

May 8th @ 12:00pm eastern

Olaf, alongside colleagues from Environment and Climate Change Canada, designs parks specifically to keep animals safe and healthy! Having worked as a Park Warden with Parks Canada, he brings a lot of knowledge on how to balance conservation and human activities with nature. His team’s dedication ensures these “parks” become sanctuaries where wildlife can live undisturbed, leaving a lasting legacy in conservation efforts.Olaf, alongside colleagues from Environment and Climate Change Canada, designs parks specifically to keep animals safe and healthy!
