RV Falkor | Hunting Bubbles

Seafloor methane emissions have been documented for decades, and new evidence suggests methane bubble plumes from the deep sea are far more numerous than previously thought. However, the physical, chemical and biological processes that dictate exactly how this methane is transferred into the ocean, or in some cases possibly even directly into the shallow ocean and atmosphere, remain challenging to understand. This month-long expedition is the first multi-disciplinary and "on location" assessment of changes to rising seafloor bubble plumes. A diverse team using a wide range of new instruments will work on imaging, collection, and analysis of rising methane bubbles. Outcomes of this technology-based expedition will increase our understanding of the influence of the deep sea on the Earth’s climate; and support technological innovation in deep-sea research.
