Jessica Melvin | Shoreline Plastics

Jessica Melvin is a Project Coordinator and Researcher with Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada. She leads the Placentia Bay Ocean Debris Survey (PODS), the first long-term multi-season monitoring effort for marine debris (namely plastics) on the island of Newfoundland. She holds a Masters of Coastal and Marine Management from the University of Akureyri (Háskólinn á Akureyri) in Iceland and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology. Prior to her work with PODS, Jessica was an active member of the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) where much of her work investigated plastic ingestion in locally captured food-fish (Atlantic cod). She has been continuously involved in various forms of marine debris monitoring since 2016, during which time she has prioritized collaboration with local communities and the use of open-source, accessible technologies and protocols.
