Expedition to Fernando de Noronha | Luiz Rocha and Justin Grubb

Through the California of Sciences’ Hope for Reefs initiative, Luiz and his team explore the depths of the ocean and the edge of coral reefs in a region known as the Mesophotic Zone. To explore these regions, Luiz must use his advanced SCUBA training to dive over 500 feet below the surface to research the fish species that exist in deep reefs. The Hope for Reefs team has discovered over 20 new species of fish and helped establish two new marine protected areas as a result of their efforts. Justin Grubb joined the team in Fernando de Noronha, Brazil to document their important work.

Luiz Rocha’s interests and experience are centered on the evolution, phylogeography (or the geographic distribution of genetic lineages), conservation, biogeography, systematics and community and behavioral ecology of coral reef fishes. He frequently tries to combine these fields, invoking ecology to help explain evolutionary patterns and using molecular tools to test biogeographic and systematic hypotheses. The overall objective of this interdisciplinary research is to test existing hypotheses (and propose new ones) about what generates and maintains the extremely high biodiversity in tropical coral reefs.

Justin Grubb is a wildlife filmmaker, photographer, published writer, naturalist and co-founder of Running Wild Media. Justin earned his With years of international wildlife field research and formal/informal teaching experience, Justin combines these two fields with media to enhance science communication. Justin’s love for nature and passion for the outdoors has brought him to some of the most extreme habitats on earth to study and film critically endangered wildlife. Justin is currently traveling the country with his fiance and dog in their travel camper. He is a 2017 Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leader, Term Member at the Explorers Club and a Nat Geo “Wild to Inspire” award winning filmmaker.
