Year of the Bird

September 1 - December 31, 2018

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the most powerful and important bird-protection law ever passed.
To celebrate during the new school year, we'll be hosting a series of events from September through December to introduce students to some amazing bird species and important conservation work taking place around the world.
Sign up with your students to learn about simple things you can do each month to make a difference for birds and our planet: https://secure.everyaction.com/dS085IbtnkSVsloby5h1ig2

Join Boise State University's Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO) to learn all about their raptor migration project. We'll follow the scientists into the field to watch them study migrating birds up close at their Lucky Peak Research Station. We will get to observe as the ornithologists capture, band, measure, and weigh birds of prey that are migrating south for the winter, and learn how, why, and when they study birds in Idaho.

Meet a Barred Owl, Peregrine Falcon and American Crow! Lindsay Obermeier is the Director of the Raptor Program and Animal Ambassadors at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Graduating in 2007 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Environmental Studies, Lindsay went on to become a bird trainer and educator at World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis. Moving back home to Milwaukee in 2011, Lindsay became involved with the Raptor Program at Schlitz Audubon. The birds of the Raptor Program would not survive in the wild and Schlitz Audubon is their forever home. With training from staff, the birds are strong educators and assist in teaching about the species. Lindsay is excited to share the beautiful birds with you!
